Krita
FreeA free, open source digital painting program for illustration, concept art, comics and animation.
About Krita
Krita is a free and open source painting program made by artists. It is designed for illustration, concept art, comics, texture work and frame-by-frame animation.
It offers a large brush engine, layers, masks, vector tools and animation support, and works well with drawing tablets. The latest release in our data, version 5.3.4 for Windows, adds video export on Android so animations and timelapses can be rendered, and removes the GIMP XCF import plugin because its library is no longer maintained.
Krita is published under the GPL-3.0 licence, with no cost on desktop. The Google Play listing shows in-app purchases for the Android edition, and the Android app has a lower rating of 3.4. It suits digital artists who want a professional painting tool without a subscription. It is not designed as a photo editor, so photo retouching is better done in GIMP or similar software. The project is supported by donations and development funds, which is why the desktop application stays free for everyone to download and use.
Use the desktop version for serious work. The Android edition is more limited and has weaker store ratings.
