Google Authenticator
FreeGoogle's two-factor authentication app that generates time-based one-time codes, with optional Google account sync.
About Google Authenticator
Google Authenticator is a mobile app that generates one-time codes used for two-step verification when you sign in to online accounts. It works with Google accounts and with any service that supports the standard time-based one-time password method. It is available for Android and iOS.
The app generates six-digit codes that refresh every 30 seconds and works without an internet connection once set up. Later versions added the option to sync codes with a Google account so they are not lost with a lost phone, and a dark theme and QR transfer between devices. The interface is deliberately minimal.
It suits people who want a simple, free way to add two-factor codes. Compared with rivals such as Microsoft Authenticator or Aegis, it has fewer features. Syncing codes to a Google account makes recovery easier but means your codes are stored with Google, so choose according to your threat model. The Google Play rating is lower than many apps, which reflects complaints about sync and transfer problems in the past. No ads are shown and the app is free.
Turn on sync or keep a copy of your backup codes. If you lose the phone without a backup, recovery can be difficult.
