Element
FreeA secure, open source Matrix messaging client for chat and collaboration with encryption and self-hosting.
About Element
Element is a chat and collaboration client for the Matrix open network. Because Matrix is decentralised, you can use Element on a public server, a company server, or one you run yourself, and bridge conversations to other chat systems.
The desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux is open source and supports encrypted rooms, direct messages, spaces, threads, voice and video calls, and cross-signing verification of devices. Element makes the Matrix software and sells hosted and enterprise services, while the client itself is free to download and use on public Matrix servers. Hosted plan prices are not given in the data.
It suits privacy-minded communities, open source projects, governments and organisations that need control over their data. Setup is more involved than mainstream messengers, and the experience depends on the homeserver you pick. Note that on mobile, Element Classic is the previous-generation app, and Element X is the newer client.
Pick your homeserver deliberately, since it holds your account. On phones, prefer Element X for new installs.
